Welcome to the website of Manchester based artist, Michael Gutteridge.

Site Plan

I have grouped the paintings according to subject matter on different pages, named, for no particular reason, after each of the Marx Brothers.

Here’s what’s on them:

Harpo (3 pages) contains paintings of pubs and bars in Manchester.
Chico (2 pages) contains paintings of more panoramic views of Manchester including skylines.
Zeppo (3 pages) contains paintings of some of the many squares in Manchester.
Groucho (2 pages) contains paintings of miscellaneous scenes. including festivals in Manchester.
Karl (3 pages) contains paintings of specific buildings.
Gummo (1 page) contains paintings of places other than Manchester such as Gothenburg, Sweden.
Minnie (1 page) contains paintings of Manchester Streets including some of characteristic red-bricked, terraced housing.
Trams, (2 pages and so-called on account of running out of names of members of the Marx family) contains paintings of Manchester trams and tram stations.

You can click on any painting to enlarge it; this is recommended if you want to appreciate the brushwork or detail in each painting.

I hope you enjoy looking at them!

I apologise for not keeping my News section very up to date. I'm usually too busy painting! I have decided to put the most recent news items here on the home page so that it is more easily accessible for anyone who may be interested. The actual news page will still remain and will include these and older news items as an archive.

Exhibition at the Portico May 2008

Rhapsody in Red Brick

Bars on Deansgate 2 6%A collection of 27 mostly brand new works were exhibited at The Portico Library & Gallery, 57 Mosley Street, Manchester, M2 3HY www.theportico.org.uk from 1st May to 29th May 2008. Although most of the new works were scenes of Manchester in my usual style, some of them were a wee bit more experimental or show a more narrative subject matter. More info about the exhibition can be found in the April 08 Portico Quarterly Magazine. An Adobe PDF version is available here. A small selection of the new works that were shown at the exhbition can be viewed here.

Tides Video

The TidesIn Autumn 2007 a selection of stills of some of my paintings of Manchester scenes were used in a music video by the gradely, up and coming, Manchester Indie band The Tides. You can see this video and find out more about the band at their Myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/thetidesinfo The video with the paintings is called ‘Edit’ and is about half way down the page on the right. It was made by Buzz Fuzz. Alternatively, it can be found on YouTube at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7yTgkHKNgQ

Assembly Art Prize

winner 07 Bloxham12%In October 2007 I was invited by The Portico Library and Gallery to be one of the three judges at The Assembly, 11th annual Schools' Exhibition and Art Prize. Information about the event including a list of the eventual prize winners can be found here. The above picture is one of the winners, Self Portrait by Eleanor Savage of The Oldham Hulme Grammar School which won The Bloxham Charitable Trust Prize. Judging the entries wasn't in any way easy and I can honestly say I would have liked to have been able to award a lot more prizes than we as judges were able to, such was the high quality of a lot of the work. Each judge had differing points of view and there was a lot of debate, but I think we struck a fair balance in the end.
