Street in Manchester 22%
A Street In Manchester (40x50cm. Acrylic on board) Painted 2001

Through the densely packed rows of of red-bricked terraced streets, social breakdown and anarchy seem to be spreading like an urban virus, just as plagues of TB and typhoid used to do at the time of the industrial revolution. As yet, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Diarmuid Gavin haven’t arrived with a camera crew to give one of the houses a much needed makeover.

Many streets were covered in bunting and flags during the jubilee summer, yet I was never sure if some of them were for that or to support England’s progress through the 2002 World Cup.

I am pleased to note that this painting was mentioned in an interview given by the poet Carole Houlston as being the source of inspiration for her poem, which was shortlisted as one of the ten finalists for the Poem For Manchester competition run by the BBC. You can read or hear this poem here.
